I rise to strongly support this legislation, the Sentencing Amendment (Alcohol Treatment Orders) Bill of 2024. This is a reform that has been a long time coming.
Honourable Speaker, I rise to make my first contribution to a bill in this place. I am pleased to say on behalf of the Greens that we will be supporting the Human Tissue Amendment Bill 2024.
For people who have been through that traumatic process, it is very difficult to make amends. But what the parliament is doing here now is ensuring that in future proceedings there is a trauma-informed approach to these cases.
The genesis of the commission of inquiry is what was revealed was happening, and had happened, and the damage that had been caused at the Launceston General Hospital, but also through our education system.
The offence of begging has rightfully been decriminalised in the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales and it is beyond time for Tasmania to follow suit.
The Greens certainly understand that assaults on workers in workplaces are unacceptable, and concerningly, there definitely appears to be an increase in some areas of work where workers are at risk.
Madam Speaker, the Greens will be supporting the Surveyors Amendment Bill 2024. We are satisfied that the proposed measures are sensible and appropriate.
The Greens have been advocating for expanding the court‑mandated diversion program to include alcohol-related offending since 2016.
It is critical that no party is taken advantage of, particularly a person who lacks resources to litigate a legitimate claim.
