It’s about fracking time for a permanent ban on fossil fuel fracking in Tasmania.

For over a decade the science has been very clear: fracking is not compatible with Tasmania’s environment or agricultural sector. And the fossil fuel industry is not compatible with serious climate action.

That’s why the Greens will table a bill to ban fracking when Parliament returns.

While the Liberals again extended their fracking moratorium, this time until 2030, this temporary planning does not provide farmers and primary industries with the long term confidence they need.

Tasmania doesn’t need to waste time having the same conversation every few years when the moratorium is expiring.

Farmers, scientists and environmentalists have all lobbied for the state government to permanently ban fracking. It’s time they were heard.

In a climate emergency, the fossil fuel industry needs to be rapidly decreasing, not expanding. The Victorian Government have read the writing on the wall and banned fracking – what possible reason could the Liberals have for keeping the farm gate open to future gas and oil possibilities?

The Greens have been working toward a ban on fracking in Tasmania for years, and this Bill is a significant step to providing our farmers and future generations genuine certainty that this practise will not be undertaken in the climate crisis.

We must protect our island’s environment, economy, and lifestyle from this damaging practice forever.
