The Greens share Tasmanians’ disappointment that one end of Jefferys Track has been closed off to the public, preventing recreational use and blocking a section of the much-loved Tasmanian trail.
This short section of Jefferys Track crosses private land, and while the landowner supports continued public access, they have received legal advice that ongoing public use exposes them to legal liability and maintenance responsibilities that is too greater burden to keep facilitating access.
The landowner, the Greens, and numerous other stakeholders have written to the Liberal Government seeking a resolution and reclassification of the private land to a public road reserve.
Despite this, no action has been taken, leaving the landowner with no realistic option but to halt any further public access. By the Liberal Government failing to act, Tasmanians have lost access to this historic trail.
The Liberals need to be transparent about what actions they will take to ensure the issue is urgently rectified, and people can continue to enjoy the track.
