Close to 200 people have attended a Greens’ community forum in Launceston, calling for the Liberal and Labor parties to abandon their unpopular billion-dollar Hobart stadium.
People in the north are outraged – why should they pay for a billion-dollar stadium in Hobart? It’s a slap in the face, especially when our health services are crying out for funding, and people can’t find an affordable home.
The community was incensed that the Liberals want to fast-track the stadium planning approval by pushing legislation through Parliament. It’s a completely corrupted process.
They’re tired of the broken promises. The Liberals have gone over their spending cap before building has even started. Labor said they didn’t support the stadium last election, but now they’re giving it unconditional support.
We heard from the community that they want an AFL team, they just don’t want to be forced to build a billion-dollar stadium by the major parties and the AFL. It makes no sense, especially when there’s already a perfectly good stadium at York Park.
The Greens have been the strongest voice against the stadium since day one. We’ll continue to fight to stop the Hobart stadium, and invest in affordable housing and a health system that works.
