The EPA are investigating an allegation of unauthorised reclamation of the Derwent River with potential use of contaminated materials, Greens questions in Budget Estimates have confirmed.
The Greens had been contacted about land being reclaimed adjacent to an industrial site at Derwent Park, with contaminated materials within the fill. Under Greens’ questioning in Budget Estimates, the EPA confirmed they are investigating this allegation, jointly with the Glenorchy City Council.
The EPA wouldn’t confirm who was being investigated, or exactly where the site subject to the land reclamation is. While their investigation is ongoing and it is unknown when it will conclude, the EPA committed to publicly announcing the results if there has been a breach.
Any unauthorised reclamation of the Derwent River is completely unacceptable. The Derwent is a vital and beloved public waterway – it shouldn’t be used for private gain without the proper approvals and community engagement.
The potential use of contaminated materials like asbestos for this land reclamation only make these reports more concerning. This could have serious implications for those who use and live around the Derwent River.
We look forward to the EPA keeping the public informed on their investigation, and the implications for the Derwent River and surrounding community.
