From Maydena to Malbena, parks hypocrisy can take a hike

While it is welcome to see there is accountability for some who don’t pay lease fees in Parks, the inconsistency with which compliance is being applied is ripe with hypocrisy.

The Maydena Bike Park, which employs over 200 people and contributes millions to our regional economy, has been threatened with their lease cancellation over unpaid fees.

Meanwhile at Lake Malbena, the proponent of the perpetually failing heli-tourism proposol is in significant arrears for overdue lease payments, but has recently received another lease extension.

Last month the entire crossbench and some independent Legislative Councillors wrote to the Parks Minister calling for the Malbena lease to be cancelled, but the Minister said it would not be reasonable to do so. But now we’re seeing a different operator being threatened by the government with that exact possibility.

Of course, all businesses should be paying their lease fees. But how is it reasonable or fair to threaten one business that’s behind on payments with lease cancellation while extending another endless lifelines?
This looks like double standards being applied, with the proponent of the Lake Malbena development seemingly again being given preferential treatment.
Given the Liberals’ track record in supporting the Lake Malbena proponent in any way possible, we’re not surprised by this one bit. But that doesn’t make it any less appalling.
