Tasmanians have made it crystal clear they strongly oppose building a billion-dollar plus stadium at Macquarie Point. Despite their views, and all the major issues with the project, Jeremy Rockliff has refused to even attempt to renegotiate the AFL deal.
If the Premier won’t stand up to the AFL, the Greens will. We are writing to AFL CEO Andrew Dillon to call on him to rethink the League’s position on the stadium.
Given the heartless approach the AFL has taken to this issue so far, and the doubt they’ve shown in Tasmania for many years, we don’t expect them to immediately give up on wanting a stadium. We recognise the passion of Tasmanians to have a team, and to not waste our scarce resources on a third stadium. Someone has to fight for the community, be their voice and start the push back against the AFL’s unfair demand.
With over 200,000 members signed up, a surge in Auskick participation, and widespread enthusiasm in the community for the Devils, it’s clear our team can be successful without having to build a costly new stadium. The AFL needs to recognise this and to change their position.
Our letter to the AFL is available here.
