The Greens are pleased to help launch Our Place’s roaming billboard calling out the Rockliff Government’s decision to slash public service jobs while continuing with a costly stadium.
The Liberals could’ve chosen to balance to the budget by scrapping the stadium and making corporations pay their fair share. Instead, they chose pain for Tasmanians already doing it tough, with brutal cuts to essential services that cannot meet demand already.
Few expect the cost of the stadium to stop at the current $1.13 billion estimate and the state will need to borrow well over $30 million every year for decades to come, simply to pay the interest bill on construction borrowings. Meanwhile $1.5 billion will be cut from government services over the next four years.
The community are outraged, and they’re continuing to rail against the Liberals’ warped priorities. Our Place have launched a roaming billboard, which criticises the Liberal Government’s decision to cut thousands of public service jobs instead of stopping the stadium.
The Greens will continue to scrutinise the Liberals’ budget choices and the stadium project in Budget Estimates next week. We’re looking forward to hearing the Liberal Government’s response to concerns raised over contractors accepted for the stadium tender and Treasury’s warnings about the extensive risks the project poses to Tasmania’s finances.
