The Tasmanian Greens are delighted to announce that Fraser Brindley will be the Greens’ lead candidate for the key seat of Lyons in the upcoming State election.
With its strong communities and immense natural wealth, we believe Lyons deserves Green representation at the State level.
All five sitting Liberal and Labor members support Tassal’s expansion into Okehampton Bay and pristine East Coast waters, ignoring community concern about the damage to the marine environment, impact on recreational fisheries and on the region’s growing visitor economy.
It was great to welcome Australian Greens’ Leader, Senator Richard Di Natale, to Tasmania’s beautiful East Coast for today’s launch, highlighting the tenacious work that the Greens have done at a National and State level to ensure the industry is properly regulated, monitored and there is a high degree of transparency and accountability applied to it.
We all want a salmon farming industry Tasmania can be proud of for the long term.
Fish farm expansion is just one of the issues Fraser will be focused on in the lead up to the State election. He is also passionate about rural and regional health services, which are being eroded by Federal and State governments, and ensuring every young person in Lyons has access to the same educational opportunities as students living in or near major centres.
Fraser Brindley grew up in country Victoria, has seven years experience as a local councilor and moved to Evandale to start a family four years ago because of his love of Tasmania. We’re really proud that a person of Fraser’s calibre has put his hand up to represent Lyons in the Tasmanian Parliament.
Fraser fell in love with Tasmania when he first visited as a 16 year old, doing work experience as a ranger on Maria Island.
Fraser has a demonstrated commitment to openness, accountability and transparency at all levels of government. In 2012 , Fraser and three Fairfax journalists faced charges for blowing the whistle on the Labor Party’s misuse of personal data. They were not convicted.
If elected, Fraser will be a whistle blower on poor regulation in the fish farm industry, government decisions that favour corporations over the public interest, inaction on climate change, among a whole range of issues that require scrutiny.
We will be working hard in the lead up to the State election to ensure Fraser Brindley is elected to Tasmania’s Parliament, giving the magnificent electorate of Lyons a strong Green voice for communities, environmental protection and sustainable jobs for the future.
