The Rockliff government’s failure to manage invasive species is resulting in uncontrolled populations and causing significant, costly damage across the state.
There is no clearer example of the Liberals’ failed approach than feral deer, which they’ve allowed to trample sensitive environments in national parks and the World Heritage area. New evidence has just been released of this invasive species now destroying endangered Miena cider gums in the Central Highlands.
It’s not just the environment suffering due to invasive species. In Mole Creek rabbits are causing significant damage to public facilities and structures, including school owned buildings. The local school and community association are being forced to use their own resources to address the problem.
The government’s failure on invasive species is also being felt by local councils, who are struggling to deal with big challenges with cats. And there are many issues with other, less known, species too – like wild pigs and dogs in northern Tasmania.
Invasive species seriously impact the environment, community, and primary producers. We need the government to abandon their ‘hands off’ approach and to start taking this issue seriously.
