Despite the serious problems created by invasive deer in this state, the Liberals have again failed to commit to taking action under Greens questioning in Parliament.
The rapidly increasing numbers of invasive deer across the state are causing serious problems. They’re doing significant damage to Tasmania’s National Parks, the World Heritage Area and primary industry productivity.
The community have been sounding the alarm for years on the impacts of invasive deer, economically and environmentally.
Multiple reports, including the 2024 State of the Environment report, have recommended removing the partial protection on deer as the obvious and primary measure of controlling the presently out of control population.
In other jurisdictions across Australia and New Zealand, even those who promote hunting, introduced deer are considered a pest. It’s time Tasmania caught up.
The Liberals must commit to protecting our wild places and primary producers by taking action on fallow deer. This begins with the removal of the partial protection status of this destructive invasive species.
