The Rockliff Government have let Tasmanian people and wild places down by neglecting to take meaningful action combatting invasive species. As a result of the Liberals’ inaction the community of Mole Creek are taking a stand with a petition for all Tasmanians, calling on the Government to deal with the rabbit population and damage being caused.
Schools, sporting organisations, community associations, are doing their best to keep their grounds and public spaces safe for use but it is draining them of vital resources as the rabbit issue has continually gotten worse. In extreme cases some local infrastructure is at risk of becoming structurally compromised due to the rabbit extensive warrens below them.
The rabbit outbreak is costing our community organisations and landowners dearly. They’re seeing damage at a huge scale and using their personal resources to fix the issue created by a government failure to act on this invasive species.
The community Rabbit Petition is calling on the Government to work with the Federal Government and landowners to develop alternative, humane biocontrol measures to mitigate the exponentially increasing rabbit populations, and to create a grant scheme that will fairly compensate community groups, organisations, departments, and farmers who have used their own resources to deal with the plague impacts caused by government inaction.
The Greens stand with Tasmanians calling for urgent action on invasive flora and fauna causing environmental and economic damage across the state.
In their response to the damning State of the Environment Report the Liberals used their Cat Management Plan 2024-2029 as an example of action on invasive species, but a year into that programme and the plan doesn’t even publicly exist. The Liberals cannot keep being evasive when it comes to exponentially increasing invasive species issues. They must be clear with Tasmanians about their plans to tackle a growing number of problems, such as tackling foxglove as they pledged to do in 2024, deer, cats, rabbits and more.
The petition is available here.
