Following months of requests, new image renders of the proposed Macquarie Point stadium provided by the government to RSL Tasmania are a vindication of the organisation’s concerns and show significant impacts on the Cenotaph’s values.

Ever since the stadium was announced we’ve heard Liberal politicians dismissing the concerns raised by RSL Tasmania about the stadium. But these images clearly show there’s a major problem.

The stadium is going to cost well in excess of a billion dollars, and lead to less money going to health, education, and housing.  Not only that, but it is also going to have a significant impact on the important and long-protected values of the Cenotaph, 100 years old next year.

The Liberals have been waging a PR campaign to try and sway public opinion on the stadium, including by releasing select images that attempt to make it look less imposing. Tasmanians haven’t bought the spin though, and these new images show a much more truthful picture. No wonder the government hasn’t published them.

It’s time we stopped with this stadium folly and started focusing on the big issues that Tasmanians really care about – like health, housing and education.
