The House of Assembly passed a motion in May calling on the Liberal Government to be transparent on a new cost estimate for the stadium. The Liberals must honour the will of Parliament and the people and make the updated stadium cost estimate known next week.
The conflict in the Middle East has been driven up construction costs, from fuel and materials to freight. Industry bodies and others have repeatedly warned of major projects’ budgets increasing and cost blowouts are evident on projects around the globe.
Few people genuinely believe that the $1.13 billion cost estimate for the stadium, developed before this major global event, would still stand.
That’s why Tasmania’s House of Assembly passed a motion in May, calling for an updated stadium cost estimate to be publicly released by next week. This was an important collective call from the Parliament for transparency over the true budget of this major project.
The Liberal Government opposed the motion, and MPDC have since told PAC it didn’t intend to comply with Parliament’s due date.
Are the Liberals going to defy the will of the House and keep the true stadium cost secret at MPDC’s behest? Or will they allow the scrutiny needed of the biggest infrastructure project in Tasmania’s history?
The Liberals’ promises about price haven’t held up to date. On a project which has already seen multiple budget blowouts before construction has even begun, it’s vitally important Tasmanians know just how much the stadium is set to cost them.
The Greens are calling on the Liberals to honour the will of Parliament and the public and release an updated stadium cost estimate.
