In a shocking betrayal of victim-survivors, the Premier would not commit to a date for the closure of Ashley Youth Detention Centre in Parliament.
It comes a mere day after a settlement was reached on the Ashley Youth Detention Centre class action. This settlement recognises that for decades the Tasmanian Government failed to prevent harm to Tasmanian children.
As long as Ashley remains open, there is a live and current risk of abuse occurring, while frequent lockdowns violate the human rights of children at the centre. It’s utterly shameful that the Premier will not commit to a date for closing Ashley.
The Commission of Inquiry recommended that Ashley Youth Detention Centre be closed as soon as possible. Yet the Liberal Government is still dragging their feet a year after the report was released.
It’s just not good enough. While the Tasmanian Government continues to delay, Tasmanian children remain in danger. Premier Rockliff must commit to a date by which the Ashley Youth Detention will be closed.
