The Rockliff Government is continuing to fail vulnerable children and young people, the Productivity Commission’s Report on Government Services shows.
The number of young people who returned to sentenced supervision within a year has increased. This growth is seriously concerning.
After the Commission of Inquiry, the Liberal Government should be taking all measures necessary to ensure children and young people don’t return to sentenced supervision. This report shows they’re failing.
Is it any wonder, when they’re talking tough on youth crime, instead of the therapeutic, trauma-informed and preventative approach to youth justice recommended by the Commission of Inquiry?
Tasmania is also the worst in the nation when it comes to ensuring young people in our child protection system have a case plan. This means that vulnerable children are less likely to get the care and support they need.
It’s just not good enough. Tasmanian children should have the same care as those on the mainland. The Liberal Government must increase funding and ensure vulnerable children have all the protections they need, including case plans.
The Liberal Government must prioritise protecting Tasmanian children and young people, and properly fund the ongoing implementation of the Commission of Inquiry’s recommendations.
