Vica Bayley MP, Greens Housing Spokesperson:
The Housing Register hit another record high, rising beyond 5,500 applicants, according to new Homes Tasmania data. It comes at a time when rents are at unprecedented levels, and vacancy rates are some of the worst on record.
As the cost of living continues to rise, Tasmanians are struggling to afford the basics like food, fuel and rent. There’s been a sharp increase in the number of Tasmanians seeking government help, with more people than ever on the waitlist for social and affordable housing.
This crisis requires action now. To stem the rising numbers of Tasmanians needing to apply for social and affordable housing, the government should freeze rents and stop unfair evictions during the fuel crisis. Everyone deserves a home they can afford.
While the Liberals’ plan to disband Homes Tasmania and move the provision of social housing back within government is welcome, we still haven’t heard how they plan to actually improve things for the growing number of Tasmanians waiting for housing.
For decades, the Liberals haven’t invested in building homes like Tasmanians need. Ahead of the May State Budget, the Liberal Government needs to get their priorities straight and put the money needed into building new homes for Tasmanians.
Cecily Rosol MP, Greens Spokesperson for Children and Young People:
Anglicare Tasmania have released a new report which shows large numbers of families are seeking help with housing insecurity, with profound impacts on children. More than 4,000 families accessed the Housing Connect Front Door Service last year.
It’s really concerning to see how many families with children are struggling to find an affordable place to live. Homelessness and insecure housing can have real impacts on children’s wellbeing and development.
People simply shouldn’t have to sleep in cars or tents, couch-surf or stay with domestic and family violence perpetrator just to keep their children housed. Tasmania’s children deserve a safe place to call home.
The Liberals needs to do more to keep children safe, and ensure no child goes without a roof over their head. They must invest more into building homes for Tasmanians and ensure families with children are prioritised and supported to access those homes.
