Commuters once again stuck in traffic gridlock today on the Tasman Bridge will be wondering where the Liberal Government’s promised upgrades to this critical transport corridor are.
Commuters again experienced first-hand the need for the Rockliff Government to invest in accessible, reliable and free public transport, as well as pedestrian, cycling and roadway upgrades to critical infrastructure like the Tasman Bridge.
Despite the Liberals promising to introduce wider pathways on both sides of the bridge, safety barriers and a new system of lane management in 2021, the are still no signs of movement on the upgrades.
We’re seeing delays and cost blowouts on infrastructure projects across the state, and it appears the Tasman Bridge is the latest example.
Without the promised upgrades, there are ongoing safety issues for cyclists and walkers, who are currently elevated above the roadway on narrow paths, and are subject to high winds. It deters commuters from active transport across the Tasman Bridge, and alongside our inadequate public transport systems, results in more traffic congestion and carbon emissions.
The Tasman Bridge is the busiest corridor in the state. The Rockliff Government must move forward on promised upgrades to improve this critical piece of infrastructure for commuters.
