The Macquarie Point Precinct Plan has slashed the “Aboriginal Culturally Informed Zone” by 3000 square metres, and erased any commitment to delivering a Truth and Reconciliation Park.

The changes appeared between the draft and final versions of the Precinct Plan. The new “Zone” will not even require it to be “consistent with the guidance from the community”, as the draft version committed.

Such tokenism is hardly a surprise, given the Liberals’ failure to prioritise the needs of Aboriginal Tasmanians.

The Rockliff Liberals are fully committed to their mega-stadium at the expense of everything else. This appears to include their prior commitment to honouring the lives lost and telling the truthful history of colonisation.

When asked about this at Budget Estimates, Aboriginal Affairs Minister, Roger Jaensch, dismissed this deep disrespect. He was his usual, hands-off, ministerial self.

The Liberals’ stadium is not wanted, needed nor can we afford it. It’ becomes more and more divisive, and disrespectful by the day.
