Ms BURNET (Clark) – Honourable Speaker, I will not speak for too long. I will speak firstly to the amendment and understand the intention of the amendment. It is very good to hear Mr Abetz, with one of his portfolios, to step up for that greater oversight that really is required for this role as shareholder minister. It is such an important component of any successful project and any successful governance. Mr Abetz was talking and conflating the issues of the oversight that is provided on the day-to-day running of the project and delivery of the project with Moloney and Gemell and Kirkwood. That work that they are doing is crucial, but so too is the oversight, governance and scrutiny that is required. We have the shareholder minister who would do some of that and we have the option of either the amended proposal to take it back to PAC and make sure that PAC is doing that role or as the Leader of the Opposition has presented today.
The Greens will not be supporting the amendment and there are a number of reasons, but a couple of the reasons that spring to mind is the role that PAC and the monumental amount of work that PAC has already undertaken. There are members of the committee in this Chamber right now, but those members of the committee have been working very hard to get results. They are a Public Accounts Committee, their role is many-fold. It is not just on one project. It is not just on this mega project, this monumental mega project millstone which is hanging around the government’s neck at the moment. This is significant. There have been significant failings and the government needs to be accountable. It needs to be held accountable and parliament has a role and this House has a role. The Greens will be supporting that role. We take the issue of governance, accountability, scrutiny and forensic detail very seriously. We will not be supporting the amendment.
