Perimenopause and menopause can have physically and mentally debilitating effects. Hot flushes, fatigue, insomnia, weight gain, memory loss and mood changes are common symptoms for women suffering from menopause.
For too long, women have been forced to suffer in silence. Perimenopause and menopause are poorly understood and managed by government, health professionals and employers who often still treat them as a taboo topic.
We need to invest in understanding perimenopause and menopause better, and raise awareness with GPs to ensure women receive proper and affordable treatment.
* Helen Burnet MP is hosting an information session on the effects of menopause in Parliament House at lunchtime today. The event will raise awareness of the condition and the actions needed to better support sufferers.
