The heart of the Dial Range is set to be clear-felled imminently by Forestry Tasmania, according to an updated Forest Practices Plan (DL011C).
Dr Rosalie Woodruff MP, Leader of the Tasmanian Greens
The Dial Range is an ecological haven and incredibly important to the central north coast community. It’s loved for its biodiversity and beauty, relied upon for recreation, and is a tourist hotspot.
The Central Coast Council, businesses, local community groups and residents have all voiced strong opposition to plans to destroy this native forest. Forestry Tasmania has dismissed overwhelming community opposition, and plans to lay waste to the heart of the Dial Range.
One arm of the Liberal Government has only recently invested millions into tourism infrastructure, including upgrading the road into Dial Range. Meanwhile, Forestry Tasmania, propped up by public funds, plans to bulldoze the forest on the most visible peak in the range.
It’s not only ludicrous, but it’s devastating to the local community – and economy.
As Premier and local Member, Jeremy Rockliff should step in and stop the Dial Range logging. He must put the environment and his community’s values above the government’s forest destruction plans.
Nick McKim, Greens Senator for Tasmania
The Dial Range has amazing natural and scenic values and is home to threatened species including the Tasmanian devil, freshwater crayfish and masked owl.
Forestry Tasmania is trying to destroy these precious forests before the loophole which exempts forestry from national environment law is closed.
The wishes of the local community and the Central Coast Council, neither of which want this area to be logged, are being completely ignored.
If this coupe is logged it will be the thin end of the wedge, and other beautiful parts of the Dial Range will find themselves on the chopping block.
Like all of Forestry Tasmania’s logging, the destruction of the heart of the Dial Range is being heavily subsidised by Tasmanian taxpayers.
