The Greens welcome a ruling from the Supreme Court of Tasmania which will allow a resident at Beauty Point Tourist Park, previously unfairly evicted, to stay in his home.

The eviction of residents at the Beauty Point Tourist Park with little notice has been deeply distressing for them. Only last week, another resident was evicted. Many residents are elderly and unwell, and envisioned spending the rest of their lives at their homes in the Park.

A safe and affordable home isn’t just a fundamental need, it’s a basic human right. Yet in Lutruwita / Tasmania, we are the only state that doesn’t give protections to long-term residents of caravan parks. It’s left long-stay residents in parks like Beauty Point vulnerable to exploitation and eviction with little notice.

The Supreme Court has affirmed the need for the protection of long-term residents of caravan parks in this state, so they aren’t subject to unfair and uncertain tenancies. Long-term residents of tourist parks like those at Beauty Point deserve security and respect.

Instead of pushing Tasmanians towards an election nobody wants, the Liberals should be doing their job. It’s long past time the Liberals took action to protect the rights of long-term residents in tourist parks.
